Ghana's primary power producer, GRIDCo, and distributor, ECG, have released separate statements on Friday evening (September 8) to clarify the cause of a significant power blackout that affected various regions across the country.
The power outage occurred simultaneously in numerous regions, including the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Central, and Eastern Regions, at approximately 7 p.m. This event generated widespread discussion on various social media platforms.
GRIDCo attributed the outage to a disturbance in the power system. In their statement, released three hours after the incident, GRIDCo stated: "The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the 'Operator' of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), informs the public that a system disturbance occurred at 19:03, affecting parts of the country.
Restoration commenced immediately, and three-quarters of customers received supply as of 2100 GMT. Power restoration efforts continue as generation is restored."
Minutes prior to GRIDCo's announcement, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) issued a statement, indicating that the technical challenge originated from the Ghana Grid Company Limited. ECG expressed its commitment to restoring power promptly once the situation is rectified.
These statements from both GRIDCo and ECG provide clarity on the situation and assure the public that efforts are underway to resolve the power outage and restore normal electricity supply.
